Toward the end of last spring, more than 30 million vehicles, from 10 different automakers, including Honda, were recalled to replace frontal airbag assemblies. The airbags, which were made by major parts supplier Takata, contain inflators with defective metal cartridges loaded with propellant wafers. Due to deterioration, the wafers can burn too quickly, creating increased pressure, which could result in a dangerous explosion.
Yesterday, Honda issued a press release announcing that the recall has been expanded to include 2003-2004 model year CR-Vs. Due to the severity of the consequences resulting from a malfunction, affected owners are encouraged to schedule the no cost replacement as soon as possible.
The following is a list of affected Honda models:
- 2003-2007 Honda Accord
- 2001-2005 Honda Civic
- 2002-2004 Honda CR-V (all 2002 and certain 2003 CR-V previously included)
- 2003 Honda Element
- 2002-2003 Honda Odyssey
- 2003 Honda Pilot
- 2003 Acura MDX
According to the most recent press release: "American Honda continues to urge owners of Honda and Acura vehicles affected by the Takata airbag inflator recalls to get their vehicles repaired at authorized dealers as soon as possible. Vehicle owners can check their vehicles' recall status at www.recalls.honda.com for Honda owners or www.recalls.acura.com for Acura owners or by calling their authorized dealer".
