Environmental sustainability continues to be a shaping factor of the auto industry as automakers strive to increase their efforts to develop green initiatives and operations. Honda has been busy revving up its efforts and was able to see the hard work pay off with the release of the 2012 North American Environmental Report.
Here at Steve Hopkins Honda we are proud to bring you the details of the report. In terms of products, Honda was able to increase the total average fuel-economy by 3.2% to about 25.7 miles per gallon. On the manufacturing end, carbon dioxide emissions created in production were decreased by 2.0%. The amount of waste contributed to landfills from operations was also reduced by more than 90-percent from 2011. It is down to about 0.8 kilograms of waste created per vehicle. Just by looking at a few of the highlights, it's easy to see that progress has definitely been made.
Tetsuo Iwamura, Chief Operating Officer of Honda North America, commented on the brand's increased efforts and explained, "At Honda, we have made the issues of greenhouse gas emissions and energy sustainability central pillars of our effort to create new value for our customers and society. This effort extends beyond our products to include all aspects of Honda business operations in the region, including the factories that build our cars, and the operations that support them in the marketplace."1
Honda is only just beginning here. With an ambitious goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions from its production equipment and products by 30-percent by the year 2020, it is striving to continue supporting green initiatives.
