Traffic jams are inevitable. They cause needless emissions and, what's worse; they drastically decrease the fuel economy in just about every vehicle caught in one. In other words, it's just the kind of environmental issue that Honda would love to address by doing what they do best: Developing new technologies to help drivers be more efficient.
And that's exactly what the Big H plans to do for drivers in the greater Fairfield, CA area and beyond. Specifically, they're developing a new traffic jam-prevention system that has the potential to increase the average speed of a traffic jam by 23 percent, while also increasing the fuel economy of the vehicles stuck in it by eight percent. Curious to know how it works? Allow Steve Hopkins Honda to explain.
The new system will be able to interface and communicate with the in-vehicle communication systems in other cars in order to provide the driver with feedback on how to accelerate, decelerate, and brake more efficiently in a traffic jam. Doing this encourages the driver to keep a safer following distance from the car in front of them and for others to do the same.
But will it work? Honda is entering a testing phase later this month, and hopes to gather some valuable data to help refine the system before it launches. In other words, it's not quite ready yet, but things are looking promising.
And with that, we ask that you stay tuned for more news from the Steve Hopkins Honda blog. Of course, if you already trust your feet to do all the work in preventing traffic jams, then we suggest doing so behind the wheel of one of the new Honda models available for a test drive at 2499 Auto Mall Pkwy Fairfield, CA.
