How to Jump-Start Another Car

Don’t let the fact that you’ve never jump started another vehicle stop you from learning how to do it. With some basic knowledge and a little practice, you’ll soon realize that it’s a straightforward process. One of the basics is to realize that each end of the cables has a positive cable and a negative cable. The positive is marked with red and the negative is in black. Another point is that once you begin to connect the cables to a battery, use care with the other cable ends so they don’t touch a metal surface.

Begin the connection with the dead battery. Clamp the positive cable to the battery’s terminal marked with a plus sign. Then, connect the negative cable to the terminal marked with a minus sign. Go on and do the same thing on the good battery. Leave the vehicle with the good battery running. Rev the engine after a couple of minutes and try to start the other vehicle. If it doesn’t start after several attempts, it’s best to stop and have your car serviced.
